Dosage Form

Single-dose pre-filled syringe for subcutaneous injection

Indication

Treatment of HIV-1 infection as part of a combination antiretroviral therapy plan.

Mechanism of Action

LuciLena targets and binds to the HIV capsid (the protective protein shell around the virus’s genetic material). It disrupts viral transport, capsid disassembly, and formation of new viral particles, preventing HIV from replicating.

Dosing and Administration

  • Route: Subcutaneous injection
  • Frequency: Every few months (e.g., twice yearly) as directed by a doctor
  • Setting: Must be administered in a clinic or hospital by a healthcare professional
  • Note: Always used with other HIV medicines – not a standalone treatment

Adverse Effects

Most common (usually mild to moderate):

  • Injection-site reactions (pain, redness, swelling, itching, nodules)
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fever

Contraindications

  • Allergy to LuciLena or any ingredient
  • Use with strong interacting drugs (e.g., rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, St. John’s Wort)
  • Severe liver problems (requires caution)
  • Do not use as monotherapy

Storage and Handling

Distributed through specialty pharmacies and healthcare networks. Administered only by trained medical professionals – not for patient self-administration.
